Employees at the Gerdau steel mill in Calvert City, Ky., will provide each student at Calvert City Elementary School with a tree sapling to plant at their home, as part of the company’s annual Arbor Day celebration. Mill representatives and Calvert City officials will visit the school on March 27, when the company distributes 800 pine saplings to students.
“At Gerdau, we are committed to contributing to the sustainability of our community,” said Holly Mackey, human resources manger at the Gerdau mill in Calvert City. “We are very excited to celebrate Arbor Day with the students in our community and teach them about the importance of keeping our planet beautiful.”
Gerdau employees will participate in the school’s assembly to educate students about the importance of planting trees in the community and to provide them with tips on how to plant their saplings successfully. By donating the tree saplings, Gerdau aims to contribute to both the community’s beautification and environmental protection.
Gerdau follows principals of sustainable development and believes that the growth of a company is related to its respect for the environment and commitment to society. Gerdau’s involvement in the community is driven by their social responsibility program, which has been implemented in all 14 countries where the company operates. The five pillars of this program are community, health and wellness, education, history and culture, and affordable housing.
