Gerdau Special Steel North America and its employees in the Jackson office and mill collectively donated more than $140,000 to support local non-profit organizations in 2011. Among the donation recipients were several local non-profits, including the Aware Shelter, John George Home, Shop Rat Foundation, and the Interfaith Shelter, as well as nationally recognized non-profits, including the local branches of the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, and Toys for Tots, among others.
“Gerdau is committed to improving the lives of people in all the communities in which we operate and we are proud to support causes that help Jackson County residents,” said Jack Finlayson, president of Gerdau Special Steel North America. “We are particularly proud of the generosity of our Jackson team who worked hard to raise funds for these worthy causes, and we look forward to continuing our dedication in 2012 and beyond.”
Each Gerdau location has its own social responsibility committee, a team of employees who work together to identify opportunities to make a positive impact on the local community.
Last year’s contribution included corporate donations as well as money from employee fundraising efforts. A large portion of the contribution came from Gerdau employees who donate a percentage of each paycheck to the United Way of Jackson County. Gerdau Special Steel North America matches 30 percent of their total pledge. In 2011, Gerdau and its employees in the Jackson corporate office and mill raised approximately $70,000 through the United Way of Jackson County campaign.
Gerdau Special Steel North America is one of the largest employers in Jackson. The company announced in 2011 that it is investing $320 million to expand its U.S. operations, including the mills in Michigan.
