Gerdau operation in Peru receives award for business eco-efficiency

Siderperu, a Gerdau operation in Peru, received the 2013 Business Eco-Efficiency Award in the category Eco-Efficiency in Water Management. The award was given for the project Water Treatment and Recirculation with Irrigation of Green Areas run by Gerdau, which enables redeployment of 100% of the water used in the industrial process. Through this project, Siderperu has reduced total consumption of water used in its operations in the city of Chimbote by more than 80%. Since 2006, when Gerdau acquired Siderperu, the Company has demonstrated its commitment to sustainable development through investment of over US$ 75 million in environmental protection - US$ 14 million of which was allocated to the Water Treatment and Recirculation System.

The Business Eco-Efficiency Award is organized by the Peruvian Environment Ministry (MINAM), Universidade Científica do Sul (UCSUR) and the Peruvian National Confederation of Private Business Institutions (CONFIEP). The award recognizes excellence in environmental management by companies which have implemented productive processes to improve management of water, solid waste and natural resources.
