Press release

Anthony Medina, a freshman at the University of California San Diego, was selected to receive a prestigious scholarship offered by Gerdau, one of the largest suppliers of long steel in the world. He is one of only 15 students to receive the scholarship, which is open to the children of Gerdau employees in North America.
“Gerdau seeks to recognize students that demonstrate exemplary academic records and good character,” said David Perkins, vice president and general manager of Gerdau Reinforcing Steel – West. “We are proud to support Anthony’s education, and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”
Anthony’s father, Salvador Medina, works as a commercial driver at the San Bernardino office. His son was honored for his achievement at a scholarship ceremony at the San Bernardino office on June 20. The students were presented their awards by Perkins and Nancy Erickson, manager of human resources.
Anthony is a management science major and plans to pursue a career in business. His hobbies include playing basketball, playing tuba and performing in the school pep band.
Winners of the scholarship are awarded a $2,500 annual stipend towards their undergraduate degrees for up to four years. Winners are selected based on their SAT scores, as well as their commendable academic performance and significant contributions to their schools and communities. Candidates must be recommended by their respective schools and are required to submit an essay outlining their personal characteristics, activities, plans and goals.
The Gerdau Scholarship program is designed to promote Gerdau’s commitment to education, one of the five pillars of their social responsibility program. The other pillars of this program include community support, health and wellness, history and culture, and affordable housing.
