Gerdau mill in Midlothian honors student with $10,000 scholarship

Nicholas Garza, a graduate of Harmony
Science Academy in Fort Worth, Texas, was selected to receive a prestigious scholarship offered by Gerdau, one of the largest suppliers of long steel in the world. He is one of only 15 students to receive the scholarship, which is open to the children of Gerdau employees in North America.
 
“Nicholas is a great kid and we are proud to support his education,” said Glen Carlisle, vice president and general manager at the Gerdau mill in Midlothian. “He is a bright student and we wish him well in the future.”
 
Nicholas’ father, Rodolfo Garza, works as a senior operator caster at the Midlothian mill. His son was honored for his achievement at a scholarship ceremony at the mill on July 11, where Carlisle presented her with the award. 
 
Nicholas will attend the University of Texas at Arlington in Texas, and plans to major in computer science with a minor in physics. He aspires to work as a programmer for a gaming company. In high school, Nicholas was active in student council and National Honor Society, and also competed with in FIRST Robotics Competitions and Science Olympiad.
 
Nicholas’ hobby is writing and producing electronic music.
Winners of the scholarship are awarded a $2,500 annual stipend towards their undergraduate degrees for up to four years. Winners are selected based on their standardized testing scores, as well as their commendable academic performance and significant contributions to their schools and communities. Candidates must be recommended by their respective schools and are required to submit an essay outlining their personal characteristics, activities, plans and goals.
 
The Gerdau Scholarship program is designed to promote Gerdau’s commitment to education, one of the five pillars of their social responsibility program. The other pillars of this program include community support, health and wellness, history and culture, and affordable housing.
