Press release

Jenn Addesso, a graduate of Eastwood Collegiate Institute, Kitchener, Ontario, was selected to receive a prestigious scholarship offered by Gerdau, one of the largest suppliers of long steel in the world. She is one of only 15 students to receive the scholarship, which is open to the children of Gerdau employees in North America.
“Gerdau seeks to recognize students that demonstrate exemplary academic records and take an interest in the community,” said Silvio Lemos, vice president and general manager at the Gerdau mill in Cambridge. “We are proud to support Jenn’s education, and we wish her well on future endeavors.”
Jenn’s father, Frank Addesso, works as a melt shop operator at the Cambridge mill. His daughter was honored for her achievement at a scholarship ceremony at the mill on July 11, where Lemos presented her with the award.
Jenn will attend St. Jerome’s University at the University of Waterloo. She has been accepted into the honors arts program, and will specialize in French education. Jenn was active in a French immersion program until the eighth grade, and participated in the government-funded program, Explore, where she had the opportunity to live in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, a French-speaking community. When Jenn is not participating is school activities, she enjoys dance and performing arts.
Winners of the scholarship are awarded a $2,500 annual stipend towards their undergraduate degrees for up to four years. Winners are selected based on their standardized testing scores, as well as their commendable academic performance and significant contributions to their schools and communities. Candidates must be recommended by their respective schools and are required to submit an essay outlining their personal characteristics, activities, plans and goals.
The Gerdau Scholarship program is designed to promote Gerdau’s commitment to education, one of the five pillars of their social responsibility program. The other pillars of this program include community support, health and wellness, history and culture, and affordable housing.
