“I’m so happy because all this food is coming right when we needed it the most.”
That was the reaction of Helen Ashe at the Love Kitchen when Gerdau Knoxville Construction Products and Gerdau ZBAR Division presented a donation of more than 1,000 pounds of food products to Love Kitchen co-founders Ashe and Ellen Turner on Wednesday, June 27.
The Love Kitchen provides meals, clothing and emergency food for homebound, homeless and unemployed persons in the East Knoxville area. Over the past month, Gerdau employees gathered a significant donation of canned goods, rice, beans and bottled water for the charity.
“On behalf of our employees at Gerdau, we are thrilled to be able to help the Love Kitchen and these incredible ladies in their mission to eliminate hunger in this community,” said Gerdau Knoxville Construction Products branch manager Paul Roach. “The generosity of our employees in this effort is another example of our company-wide commitment to community support.”
“We’re so blessed,” said Ashe. “You know how Martin Luther King had a dream? Well I had a dream too, and it’s come true right here.”
Gerdau’s Knoxville steel mill recently received the 2012 Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) Recognition in Community Involvement Award at the SMA Annual Members Conference in Washington, D.C. for its dedication to being a good neighbor in the Lonsdale community.
Gerdau, a leading producer of long steel in the Americas and one of the largest suppliers of special long steel in the world, has a robust social responsibility program that focuses on providing community support in the locations where its business operates.
