Employees at Gerdau’s Jackson, Mich. office and mill launched their Relay for Life fundraising efforts over the weekend with a benefit volleyball tournament at Hudson’s Classic Grill on Springport Rd. The tournament was open to Gerdau employees as well as the general public and raised approximately $1,000 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event, which will be held Friday-Saturday, August 3-4 at Cascades Falls Park.
This is the company’s fifth year participating in the local Relay for Life. Over the past four years, Gerdau’s Relay for Life team has raised and donated more than $25,000 to the American Cancer Society. This year Gerdau has committed to a $5,000 corporate donation, in addition to the total amount of money raised by its employees in Jackson.
“Gerdau is committed to improving the lives of people in all the communities in which we operate,” said Jack Finlayson, president of Gerdau Special Steel North America. “I’m particularly proud of our employees who volunteer their time and money to support causes that help members of the community.”
The company’s Relay for Life team has planned several other fundraising activities this summer to support the American Cancer Society (ACS). A benefit rock concert featuring Blackstone Masquerade and Steve Tucker will be held at the Michigan Theatre on Saturday, August 11 from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm. Admission is $5.00 per person, all of which will be donated to the ACS.
A second benefit volleyball tournament will be held at Hudson’s Classic Grill on Saturday, August 25. Registration will be open to co-ed teams of four and the cost to play will be $100.00 per team, which will be donated to the ACS.
For additional information about the benefit rock concert or volleyball tournament, contact Gerdau’s Relay for Life team captain, Lindsey Edwards at (517) 960-2165 or email

About American Cancer Society / Relay for Life
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s largest fundraising event where community members gather to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease that takes too many. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events that last up to 24 hours. To learn more about Relay for Life or to start or join a team, contact Catina Lowe at (517) 332-3300 or visit
