On Thursday, Feb 2, employees at the Gerdau steel mill in Midlothian, Texas, presented a check for $5,000 to benefit Manna House, a non-profit organization that has a food pantry and other services to help those in need.
“Our employees’ engagement through this process has been exponential,” said Glen Carlisle, vice president and general manager of the Gerdau mill in Midlothian. “It is our goal to make a positive impact on our community, and we are able to achieve this goal through our partnership with Manna House.”
This gift comes after Gerdau employees donated more than 13,000 pounds of non-perishable food and more than 400 new toys to the organization in December. Though the Midlothian mill has been active in social responsibility efforts for many years, 2011 marked the first year they officially participated in the Gerdau Holiday Campaign, a global social responsibility initiative that benefits communities surrounding Gerdau locations.
In addition to the $5,000 donation, a $200 contribution was made to Manna House by Narstco, the North American leader in the manufacture and supply of steel ties and turnouts and a customer of Gerdau. The company also contributed food and toys to the Gerdau Holiday Campaign in December.
The company’s work with the Manna House supports the community pillar of their social responsibility program. The other pillars of Gerdau’s social responsibility program are education, health and wellness, history and culture, and affordable housing.
Gerdau is the leading producer of long steel in the Americas and one of the largest suppliers of special long steel in the world. It has over 45,000 employees and industrial operations in 14 countries with operations in the Americas, Europe and Asia, which together represent an installed capacity of over 25 million metric tons of steel per year. It is the largest recycler in Latin America and around the world it transforms millions of metric tons of scrap into steel every year. Gerdau is listed on the stock exchanges of São Paulo, New York and Madrid and has approximately 140,000 shareholders.
